It is very important to ensure you do not fragment client records by creating a duplicate record for an existing person in PARIS. Follow the steps for Client Search in PARIS to conduct searches correctly. All steps must be exhausted before a new client is created.
Most applications require that a client's record be open. The Person Search window will open if you click on an Application Tile and a client is not already open.
Search for a Client Procedure: When you search for a client you will see one of the following outcomes:
1. The client exists and is currently receiving services from your team, which in PARIS means your team has an open referral for this client.
2. Search from Central Index:
- If you need to access a client's record for quick ‘need-to-know’ information gathering you can search from any application, except Referrals, and then use the Break Glass feature.
- The client exists but your team does not have an open referral for this client. Usually you will not be able to view the client's record in this case. Use the Break Glass feature and then log a referral.
- Search messages for records you do not have access to: see Restricted Caseload.
- The client does not exist in PARIS. See Register a New Client. If you have a client who is new to your program, search from the Referral application to create a referral.
- There is more than one record for the same client. See Duplicate records.

IMPORTANT: Duplicate clients pose a safety risk as neither record may be complete.
